FAPAV/IPSOS SURVEY 2022

The new survey on the phenomenon of audiovisual and sports piracy, conducted by Ipsos on behalf of FAPAV - Federation for the Protection of Audiovisual and Multimedia Content Industries, has just been presented. It shows how the phenomenon of piracy in Italy is constantly evolving.

Collected data recorded a growth in the number of pirated audiovisual content: in fact, 30 million more acts of piracy were estimated in 2022 compared to the previous year (+9%), mainly with reference to sports events (+26%) but also TV programmes (+20%) and series/fiction (+15%). Films remain the most pirated content with 35% of audiovisual piracy acts (more than 120 million, on average with 2021 data).

The use of illegal content is mainly through digital piracy (39% incidence), while indirect piracy (i.e. lending pirated physical or digital copies or watching them from friends) has less impact, at around 12%, and physical piracy, with 9% incidence, remains the least used mode.

The figures for acts of piracy committed by teenagers (10-14 years old) are decreasing, although they remain worrying (47% in 2022 against 51% in 2021).

The blocking of sites proves to be an effective measure for deterrence: 40% of adult pirates have in fact encountered a blocked site at least once and, among them, half have consequently turned to legal alternatives.

All data from the study are available on the Fapav webpage here.
